In the next few days, the full moon slipped over the palace without any fanfare. Unlike what Kamil was used to—the bustling of shifters and humans throughout the grounds and the eager hum in the air for that night's hunt—this full moon was an almost solemn affair.

It was his third since he left Maxim and his first with Aslan. The thought of the former clogged in his chest and the latter turned it to stone.

Everyone, even the servants, wore white during the day to symbolize Yue's light, Aslan said as he dressed.

That evening after they'd bathed and eaten Aslan paced in his apartments and glanced out the windows, their ornate patterns and thick glass impossible to see through, but if anyone could do it, it would be Aslan.

"Who patrols the palace on such a night?" Kamil asked. Yue's power yanked on him. The pale glow from the window reminded him that the sunlight faded, and soon the goddess would rise and beckon her children to their true shapes. He stripped and removed the collar, wrapping the thick gold chain around his arm.

Aslan looked at him. "Human guards."

"Hmm. And have you ever considered . . . ." He wasn't certain how to word it, even if they'd spoken of such a thing before.

"Killing the Sultan and Queen on this night? Yes, but no matter how strong I am I can't take down two alphas in their shifted form."

Kamil stepped close, wrapped his arms around Aslan's waist and slipped the fabric from his hips. "You're not alone if I'm with you."

Aslan snorted and turned, lips flashing a grin before they crashed into Kamil's—hot and hungry. "And you're just a beta."

Kamil was about to tell Aslan that he saw an omega take down an alpha before, but Yue's power flowed over his skin before he got the chance. The change slithered across his flesh and into his bones. The power that flowed through him forced him to shift into his mighty wolf shape—the one he hadn't taken in far too long.

It felt akin to putting on his favorite pair of boots.

Aslan's black fur and bright hazel eyes glinted in the fading light, and Kamil nuzzled him gently. Together, they curled on the floor to wait out the night.

The days after the full moon, Kamil struggled between the urge to tell Aslan the truth about his mission (a suicidal thing to do) and the urge to rip out the Sultan's throat himself so his mate didn't have to bother. The second, obviously, didn't come to pass.

Aslan paced around his room and took to the streets more often than not. His information network made slightly more sense to Kamil now though he still hadn't outright asked the Prince about it. He was used to figuring things out for himself, and it seemed Aslan used that network to gather information from the guards who wouldn't talk to him directly—the ones who knew when the Sultan would launch his army.

Kamil's gut clenched. He was sent to help King Lucien and stop the war, and he hadn't managed to do that yet.
